You. Here. Now.
Do you believe your eyes? Can you trust your senses? And is anything really as it seems? These are just some of the questions posed by ILLUSION: Nothing Is As It Seems, the mind-bending new exhibition at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Created by Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin, ILLUSION playfully combines techniques used by magicians and explored by neuroscientists to uncover the many ways our minds are fooled by sensory deception.
ILLUSION joins magic with psychology, optical illusions with scientific reasoning and confusion with clarity. More than 20 intriguing exhibits deceive the eyes of the visitor, showing that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality we observe. ILLUSION will distort your senses and mystify your mind.
Your Mind Is Playing Tricks on You When You:
- Watch digital images of bugs “crawl” off a screen and onto your body
- See a three-dimensional figure appear amidst thin strands of fiber.
- Gaze into a mirror and morph into your inner animal
This is the North American premiere of this traveling exhibition, which will go on to tour other venues across the U.S. ILLUSION is on view at the Fleet through Sunday, January 11, 2015. ILLUSION is curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson.
According to Wiseman, "Illusions give us a greater appreciation of how we view the world, and this exhibition brings us closer to understanding the magic of the mind."
ILLUSION: Nothing Is As It Seems was created by Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin, pioneers of the Science Gallery Network.
And by the Reuben H. Fleet Foundation Fund at the San Diego Foundation
