The
giant tilted IMAX® Dome screen, combined with the world's largest
film format, create a super-realistic cinematic experience. The Reuben
H. Fleet Science Center is home to the world's first, and San Diego's
only, IMAX Dome Theater. Built in 1973, the Dome is 76 feet in diameter
and made of 1500 triangular aluminum tiles. The tiles are not solid; they
are perforated with tiny holes to allow air, light and sound to pass through.
The Dome is tilted 25 degrees from the horizon, which gives audiences
the illusion of being suspended in space. Both IMAX films and planetarium
shows are projected onto the Dome screen, immersing audiences in incredible
images.
