Fleet 40th Anniversary Celebration begins March 9, 2013
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, PLEASE:
San Diego, CA March 1, 2013—Our first two Science on the Rocks, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center’s after-hours party for adults 21 and older, sold out, so don’t delay! A truly decadent time was had by all at both “The Sweet Science of Chocolate” and “Tap This: The Art of the Brew.” Become a Rock Star and join us to celebrate Pi Day and Albert Einstein’s birthday at Pizza, Pinot and Pi at the Fleet on Thursday, March 14, at 6:30PM.
Meet local vintners from Bernardo Winery, Orrin Vineyards & Winery, La Serenissima Vineyard & Winery, Rock Canyon Vineyards and PRP Wine International and share their expertise "In Vino Veritas" and samples of their "Nectar of the Gods." Get wine-tasting tips from Shorago Training Services on how to correctly sample your pinot noir, and why it is such a special wine. Tasting tokens are included with your ticket. Or pick your own pleasure and hit the no-host full bar from BarWorks, offering beer, wine, and cocktails. You can also indulge in tempting tastes from Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, Barleymash, Pop Chips and Uptown Tavern, with pies from Sammy’s Wood-Fired Pizza and Coco’s Bakery!
As always, we challenge our guests’ scientific knowledge as you play! Pi Day activities will include the chance to test your drawing skills and explore the effects of circular rotation as you create drawings and patterns on a monster turntable. Help complete the longest Pi chain, a paper chain spiral of pi––and a collaborative participatory art piece with mathematics as its foundation and inspiration. At the Pi Ku poem wall, visitors are invited to create their own piku poems and put them up for display. Pi Ku are similar to haiku, except the syllable form is 3, 1, 4 and each poem should have an image or word or action that somehow evokes roundness, math or science.
Take a wineglass photo and study refraction and reflection as you see your friends’ image “flip” in the photo through the wine glass. As a treat to take with you, express your innate artistic tendencies in shrinky dink wine charms––plastic, markers, wire––and inspiration! Polystyrene sheets are made of polymer chains processed to straighten out into flat sheets––like your deli container from lunch. After creating your masterpiece, we heat them and they bounce back into their original disorder, causing the plastic to shrink and thicken. Learn how to conquer inertia while hula-hooping––you don’t have to measure the circumference of the hoop to reclaim childhood! The Hula-Hoop was patented by Wham-O co-founder, Arthur "Spud"Melin on 3/5/1963. How do your Hula-Hoop skills compare to these guys? http://bit.ly/o4NviW
Join in all these activities while having fun, dancing to a soundscape by Sunset Mobile Music and creating your own A Little Scene Flip Books. We would also like to acknowledge generous donations from Pacific Event Productions, Uber, ProDigital and Cort Trade Show & Event Furnishings.
You may not become an oenophile or learn derivations of the A to Z for such vintage terms as acescence, appellation, aromatic, biodynamic viticulture, blind tasting, breathing, carbonic maceration, cru, cuvée, decanting, eau-de-vie, flagon, french paradox, noble rot, nose, redox, sommelier, tasting flight, ullage, varietal, wine tasting, yeast, yield and zymology—but sampling wine and having a great time is guaranteed!
All proceeds benefit the Fleet’s nonprofit mission of furthering the public understanding and enjoyment of science and technology. Tickets are $20 for non-members; $18 for students and military; and $15 for Fleet members, staff and volunteers, and Balboa Park employees.
Tickets for this adults-only party are on sale now through Eventbrite at http://science-rocks-pizza-pinot-and-pi.eventbrite.com (some fees apply) or onsite at the Fleet’s Ticket Counter. This event is open to adults ages 21+ only. I.D. is required. A cash bar features beer, wine, and cocktails. Space is limited and prices increase the day of event—if not sold out, tickets at the door will be $25; no discounts apply.
We have discovered the scientific formula for a perfect night out: Take one part fun with friends and slowly mix in two parts intriguing interaction. Then add a scoop of nibbles and a cup of libations. Cover all ingredients with music and laughter. Let it simmer to perfection. And voila! You have Science on the Rocks—a delightful evening of unexpected activities, delicious tastes, and indulgent experiences for adults ages 21 and up. Science on the Rocks is held on select Thursday evenings, and each event features a unique theme.
It’s not a party unless your friends come, right? Well, they’re invited, too!
