Scout Workshops

Junior Friends of Balboa Park PatchScout programs are offered on weekends year-round and are subject to availability. Each workshop will begin at noon. A minimum of 10 scouts is required for each program, and a maximum of 24. We encourage partnering with other groups to take a badge workshop together. Two adult chaperones are required for every 8 scouts. Additional adults will be charged our current group rate. Successful completion of these workshops will fulfill the requirements for each of the badges offered. Badges and awards are not supplied as part of this workshop. Scout workshops cannot be booked less than one month in advance. Please have two possible dates in mind when you call.

Home Scientist Badge

Find ways that you can use science every day! Learn to be a kitchen scientist, explore static electricity, dive into density, create bubbling reactions and experiment with science!

Junior Girl Scouts Badge Workshops

Detective Badge

Jump right in to the science of detecting! Practice the power of observation, communicate in code, have fun with fingerprints, look at evidence and solve a mystery.

Cadette Girl Scout Badge Workshop

Special Agent Badge

Uncover the mysteries of forensic science! Investigate fingerprints, reveal reality, explore the science of chromatography, key into body language and be a forensic artist.

Duration: 2 hours

Boy Scouts

Boy Scouts attending workshops are encouraged to bring a snack.

Wolf and Bear Cub Scouts

Science Everywhere Nova Award and Astronomy Belt Loop

Examine space and investigate scientific questions like a real scientist.  Explore our exhibit galleries and watch an IMAX movie about science.

Duration: 3 hours, plus a Theater show

Fee: $20 per Scout


Webelos Badge Workshops

Scientist Activity Badge

Utilize the Science Center exhibits and resources to test scientific laws and conduct experiments. Discover what keeps planes in the air and investigate rockets using the scientific method. Experience incredible optical illusions and learn how the eyes and brain work together to produce these strange effects.

Duration: 3 hours

Fee: $14 per Scout


Webelos Nova Workshops

Scientist Activity Badge and Science Everywhere Nova Award

Duration: 3 hours, plus a Theater show

Fee: $20 per Scout


 

Programs for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts

Challenger Scout Missions

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can experience the thrill of being an astronaut! Inside the Challenger Learning Center, groups become crew members on an exciting simulated space mission using a realistic mock-up of a Mission Control Center and Space Station.  Please note the badge is not supplied as part of this mission. A minimum of 16 participants is required to effectively run a mission. The maximum number of participants is 32. 

Duration: 2 hours

Fee: $20 per Scout

Scout Sleepovers

Get your troops together to spend a full night inside the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center!  Sleepovers include exhibit gallery admission, a show on the Giant Dome screen, educational workshops, an exhibit scavenger hunt and a light continental breakfast in the morning.  Scout Sleepovers are not geared to a specific Scout badge.

Fee: $50 per child, parent and/or guardian
